THE GREAT MAMMOTH ROAD

1833 Manuscript Map of Mammoth Road

The 1833 manuscript map of the Great Mammoth Road is at the drop down to the left and also on display at the Pelham Town Hall.  Restoration and fascimile for display were made possible by a grant from the New Hampshire State Library Conservation License Plate Program (Moose Plate Grant).

The Map drawn by BF Varnum of Dracut in 1833, depicts the main travel routes from Lowell, MA to Hookset, NH. At that time roads were in the perview of individuals & their communities.  Cooperation between communities was paramount for the success of any route.  The final statement on the map alludes to the competition between communities along present day Route 128 ( the Great Mammoth Road) and the Londonderry Turnpike (present day Route 38 or Bridge Street).
